Frequently Asked Questions
What is Polished Plaster?
The 6 main plasters we use are made of natural ingredients which are composed of fine lime putty, marble dust, coloured marble dust and mica. Natural earths or oxides are used to pigment the plaster and brick dust.
Where are the plasters from?
Keycoat plasters are sourced from the northern region of Italy, just west of Venice. Produced by a small family run company which has been producing high quality lime since the 1930's. The plasters they produce have been used in the restoration of many historic buildings in the area.
Are you willing to travel to my job?
Yes. Keycoat are based on the Essex / London border but we cover the whole of the U.K.
Over what types of surface can these plasters be applied?
Keycoat plasters can be applied over new or existing drywalls, plastered or painted walls. Surfaces must be clean, free of dust, grease and moisture. Any loose paint must be removed and repairs to any cracks in the surface must be repaired before application.
Can it be used in kitchens / bathrooms or high traffic areas?
Yes. Polished plaster can be used in any room. Water contact areas are treated with water repellent wax.
Does it create a mess or dust when applied?
Not especially. You would need the same amount of protection as if painting - i.e. take down pictures, move furniture and cover with plastic sheeting, etc.
Can you customise a plaster finish just for me?
Yes. Because of the artistic nature of Italian plaster application, each wall will be a unique statement with its own distinctive look. We will work with you or your designer to customise colours & finishes.
How many different types of plaster do you use?
We use 6 main types of plaster which are:-
- Spatula - gives a very shiny, gloss like finish.
- Metallic Stucco - very fine plaster, which gives a shimmer like finish.
- Marmorino Classic & Stucco - stone look in a matt finish. Can also be applied in pitted & dragged finishes.
- Intona Lisco, Intona Classic & Intona Grosso - mainly used for dragging, pitting and travertine effects.
- Grassello Puntinato - Decorative dotted finish.
- Marmorino - Breccia, Corallo & Dorato. These achieve a stone-like finish, good for blocking.
